DrDad’s answer: Yes, a tooth can need root canal treatment even when it doesn’t hurt. But if you have no pain and you don’t understand why a root canal was recommended, I would ask the dentist to show you the X-ray and explain the diagnosis.
In my own practice, two findings I commonly look for are a deep cavity that has reached or is very close to the pulp, or an area around the tip of the root that suggests disease. Those are examples—not the only reasons a tooth may need root canal treatment.
What I Would Ask Your Dentist
Can you show me on the X-ray and explain exactly what finding makes you recommend a root canal?
DrDad Tips
Don’t use pain alone as the test. A tooth can have a serious problem without hurting. But you should understand the evidence behind the recommendation before proceeding.
Educational information only. I cannot diagnose whether your tooth needs root canal treatment without an appropriate clinical examination and diagnostic testing.
