DrDad’s answer: When someone asks me whether they really need a “deep cleaning,” I want to see the periodontal findings—not just the name of the procedure.
I look at the gum measurements, bone levels, deposits below the gums, inflammation, and the overall periodontal examination. One finding by itself does not tell the whole story. The question is whether there is periodontal disease that needs treatment below the gumline rather than a routine cleaning.
What I Would Ask Your Dentist
Can you show me my periodontal measurements and where you see the disease or bone loss? Ask why a regular cleaning would not be appropriate.
DrDad Tips
Don’t argue about the words “regular cleaning” versus “deep cleaning.” Ask to see the periodontal findings that separate one from the other.
